Martina Franca

A sun-kissed barren land, that holds many of my memories, serves as the inspiration for a collection of ceramic tiles.

Martina Franca
The Martina Franca Collection tiles I've designed are inspired by the village of the same name in Apulia.
Trullo, a typical Apulian construction house.
Martina Franca has these beautiful pointy-roofed houses named 'trullo'. Thanks José Jóvena for the photo.

A sun-kissed barren land, red like terracotta and scattered with cracks and pebbles, making you wonder how the olive trees manage to grow so beautifully and robustly. Dry stone walls that mark the boundaries of the country roads: ‘tratturi, diaries of stories‘ (I had read that on the label of a wine, most likely a Primitivo di Manduria).

I was born and raised in northern Italy, but part of my racins are grounded in the south. The village where my grandfather lives, Martina Franca, is caracterized by these beautiful pointy-roofed houses. Martina Franca holds many of my memories.

Today, it becomes the inspiration for a collection of ceramic bathroom tiles.

The collection has been nominated for the ‘Carreaux de ciment solidaire‘ competition organized in September 2024 by Cesar Bazar, a ceramic artisan from Pantin (FR). The profits from the sale of the tiles will be entirely donated to SOS Méditerranée and Secours Populaire.

Hello, I'm Simona, and this is my happy place on the web (more on that here). I am an Italian designer and illustrator based in France, my happy place on Earth.

Illugination is where I gather my thoughts on topics ranging from education and philosophy to animation, sustainability, and sometimes even physics. Here, you will also find projects I've worked on and things I've created.

This is one of them.

Thanks for being here,
Simona
